Making Holes in Asbestos Floor Tile

According to a U. S. Environmental Protection Agency study, 1.5 million buildings in the United States have asbestos-containing floor tile covering 2.7 billion square feet of floor space!

Why make holes in asbestos floor tile?
• Anchoring equipment or fixtures to a slab covered with asbestos floor tile
• Penetrating a floor to run conduit, wires or pipes through it
• Structural or other inspections of inaccessible spaces

This program describes the following OSHA Class III work practices:
• Drilling through the tile into a slab or floor with an impact drill
• Lifting a piece of tile after cutting it with a knife to expose the substrate
• Punching a small wafer out of the tile before drilling into the substrate

How do you control dust and fibers?
Use wet methods – soapy water and shaving cream – and prompt clean-up
• HEPA vacuum cleaners not used -- no need to clean and maintain them
• Negative Exposure Assessments show respirators are not needed

Hands-on exercises – where the workers practice the procedures using simulated asbestos-containing materials – are required by OSHA for Class III training. The program instructions tell you how to set up and conduct the hands-on exercises.

All of the procedures described in this program have been shown to control worker exposure below both OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits.
