Making Holes in Asbestos Floor Tile

Videotape training program

1.5 million buildings in the United States have asbestos-containing floor tile covering 2.7 billion square feet of floor space!

U. S. Environmental Protection Agency study

Why make holes in asbestos floor tile?

Anchoring equipment or fixtures to a concrete slab or wood floor that is covered with asbestos floor tile

• Penetrating a floor to run conduit, wires or pipes through it or into buried ducts
• Fumigating a crawl space for pest control or termite extermination
• Structural or other inspections of inaccessible spaces

Attaching stanchions to the substrate with powder-actuated devices

This program describes the following work practices

(OSHA Class III work)

removing bit.jpg (153015 bytes)
lifting corner piece.jpg (307091 bytes) striking punch.jpg (347826 bytes)
Drilling through the tile into a slab or floor with an impact drill
Lifting a small piece of tile after cutting it with a knife or chisel to expose the substrate
Punching a small wafer out of the tile before drilling into the substrate

How do you control dust and fibers?

water&shavingcream .jpg (118821 bytes)
HEPA vacuum(red slash).jpg (131265 bytes)
Use wet methods – soapy water and shaving cream – and prompt clean-up
HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaners are not used, so there is no need to train workers on cleaning and maintaining them

Respirators, protective clothing & decon facilities are not needed if a Negative Exposure Assessment is in effect

All of the procedures described in this program have been shown to control worker exposure below both OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits

Hands-on exercises

Hands-on exercises – where the workers practice the procedures using simulated asbestos-containing materials – are required by OSHA for Class III training. The Instructor’s Guide tells you how to set up and conduct the hands-on exercises.

The professionally-narrated program runs approximately 35 minutes. This program is used most effectively with the Negative Exposure Assessments and Competent Person Training for Asbestos videotape from Environment-i-media, Inc. that explains how to conduct Negative Exposure Assessments and train competent persons to apply them to specific jobs.
